How India's Solar Revolution Is Changing Homes, Farms & Businesses

From rooftop solar to agricultural pumps and large-scale renewable projects, solar energy has become an important part of India's energy transition.

Solar Energy for a New India Government programmes, technology, investment and public participation.

Solar Energy in India: The Bigger Picture

India's solar sector has moved from being a relatively specialised renewable-energy technology into a major part of the country's electricity and development strategy.

Solar energy is now relevant to homeowners, farmers, small businesses, industries, educational institutions, government buildings, infrastructure developers and entrepreneurs.

The government framework is not a single subsidy programme. It includes rooftop solar programmes, agricultural solarisation, solar pumps, manufacturing policies, grid-connected projects, energy storage, financing mechanisms and state-level implementation.

Important Government Information Rule

Do not rely on old social-media posts, WhatsApp messages or outdated subsidy advertisements. Government scheme amounts, eligibility, deadlines, vendor requirements and implementation procedures can change. Verify the current rule from the relevant official portal before making payment.

What Is a Solar Subsidy?

A government subsidy or Central Financial Assistance is financial support provided under a defined government programme. It is not automatically available for every solar system.

Eligibility can depend on factors such as customer category, system capacity, location, technical standards, electricity connection, vendor requirements, state implementation and the particular scheme.

Subsidy is not the same as a discount

A commercial discount offered by a solar company and government financial assistance are different things. Customers should understand who is providing the benefit and under which official programme.

What Is a Government Solar Loan?

A loan is borrowed money. Unlike a subsidy, a loan normally has to be repaid according to the lender's terms, including applicable interest and charges.

Solar customers may encounter home-improvement loans, renewable-energy finance, equipment finance, MSME finance or agricultural finance depending on their project and eligibility.

Never confuse subsidy with loan approval

A customer can potentially use a financing arrangement for a project that also qualifies for government assistance, depending on the scheme and lender. However, government subsidy eligibility does not automatically guarantee bank approval.

Why PM-Surya Ghar Matters

PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was launched in February 2024 as a national residential rooftop solar programme. The official sanction provided for rooftop solar installations in one crore households and a total financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore.

The programme is designed around residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections and operates through a national portal and implementation framework.

The official government material also describes the programme's objective of increasing household rooftop solar adoption and reducing electricity expenditure.

How a homeowner should approach it

  • Check the official PM-Surya Ghar portal.
  • Confirm your electricity connection and eligibility.
  • Review the applicable system capacity.
  • Check the current vendor/application procedure.
  • Understand DISCOM approval and metering requirements.
  • Do not pay an unofficial person claiming guaranteed subsidy.

PM-KUSUM: Solar Power for Agriculture

PM-KUSUM stands for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan. It is a major Ministry of New and Renewable Energy programme focused on solar applications in agriculture.

The programme includes decentralised solar power generation, standalone solar agricultural pumps and solarisation of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps.

Component A

Component A covers decentralised ground/stilt-mounted grid-connected renewable-energy power plants. The programme information provides for projects in the specified capacity range and eligible participant categories.

Component B

Component B covers standalone solar agriculture pumps. This can be particularly relevant to farmers in locations where agricultural irrigation depends on diesel or other conventional power sources.

Component C

Component C covers solarisation of grid-connected agricultural pumps, including individual pump and feeder-level solarisation arrangements.

Solar Pumps and Farmers

A solar pump converts solar-generated electricity into mechanical pumping energy. Depending on the design, a solar pumping system can include photovoltaic modules, pump controller, motor-pump set, mounting structure, cables and protection equipment.

Correct pump sizing is important. The system should consider water source, head, required discharge, irrigation schedule, pipe configuration and local conditions.

Farmer Warning

The official PM-KUSUM portal warns users about fake websites and applications claiming to provide PM-KUSUM registration and asking applicants to pay money online. Always verify the official portal and authorised implementation process.

Rooftop Solar Assistance

Eligible residential customers can check the current PM-Surya Ghar Central Financial Assistance rules through the official portal.

Agriculture

Solar Pump Assistance

PM-KUSUM provides Central Financial Assistance frameworks for eligible agricultural solar-pump and pump-solarisation applications.

State Programmes

Additional State Support

State governments and implementing agencies can have additional procedures, incentives or programme-specific arrangements.

Never publish an old subsidy table as a current guarantee

Solar subsidy rates, eligible capacity, customer contribution, vendor requirements and implementation rules may be revised. This page intentionally directs customers to the current government portal rather than promising a fixed benefit for every customer.

Solar Finance

Government-linked solar finance and bank loans

A solar project can involve subsidy, customer contribution and financing. These should be treated as separate financial components.

Homeowner Finance

Homeowners can ask banks and financial institutions about suitable solar, home-improvement or other applicable retail finance products.

MSME / Business Finance

Businesses may explore equipment finance, project finance or applicable MSME lending depending on the lender's product.
