Our Commercial Solar Categories

Every business uses power differently. Below are the five commercial and large-scale solar categories offered by SolarConnect India, with how each works and who it suits best.

Commercial On-Grid Solar Power System 5 kW and Above

What it is

A grid-connected solar system without batteries. Solar power runs your business loads during the day; any shortfall is drawn from the DISCOM grid and, where net or gross metering is allowed, surplus units are exported to the grid.

How it works

Solar panels produce DC power, a grid-tied inverter converts it to AC synchronised with the grid, and a bi-directional (net) meter records import and export. The system shuts down automatically during a grid outage for safety (anti-islanding).

Best for

Offices, shops, showrooms, schools, hospitals, hotels, cold storages and factories with steady daytime load and reliable grid supply.

Key benefits

  • Lowest cost per kW of all system types – no battery bank
  • Reduces daytime grid units and demand on your bill
  • Minimal maintenance; long panel life
  • Net/gross metering as per state DISCOM rules

Commercial Off-Grid Solar Power System 5 kW and Above

What it is

A stand-alone solar system with a battery bank, independent of the electricity grid. It powers your loads from solar during the day and from stored energy at night or in cloudy weather.

How it works

Panels charge batteries through an MPPT charge controller; an off-grid inverter supplies AC power to connected loads from solar and batteries. A diesel generator can be added as backup for long cloudy spells.

Best for

Remote sites, farms, telecom and monitoring stations, construction sites, resorts and businesses where grid power is absent or highly unreliable.

Key benefits

  • Power where there is no grid connection
  • Cuts or replaces diesel generator running
  • No dependence on DISCOM approvals for export
  • Predictable, self-owned energy supply

Commercial Semi-Hybrid Solar Power System 5 kW and Above

What it is

A practical middle path: solar works with the grid and a modest battery bank that backs up only selected critical loads (lighting, computers, servers, billing counters) during power cuts.

How it works

Solar first serves loads and charges the battery; the grid fills the gap. During an outage, the inverter switches critical circuits to battery and solar. Export to grid is limited or not used, depending on the equipment and local rules.

Best for

Retail stores, clinics, banks and ATMs, coaching centres, small offices and workshops that face frequent short power cuts.

Key benefits

  • Backup for essential loads without a large battery cost
  • Solar savings plus outage protection
  • Smaller battery bank than a full off-grid system
  • Flexible – can be upgraded later

Commercial Hybrid Solar Power System 5 kW and Above

What it is

A fully integrated system combining grid connection, solar and batteries with intelligent energy management. It can export surplus power (where permitted) and also keep your business running during outages.

How it works

A hybrid inverter decides in real time whether to use solar, battery or grid, charges batteries from surplus solar, and can export to the grid through a net meter. Batteries can also be used to shave peak-hour consumption.

Best for

Hospitals, data rooms, hotels, manufacturing units, cold chains and any business where both savings and uninterrupted power matter.

Key benefits

  • Savings and backup in one system
  • Smart switching between solar, battery and grid
  • Can support peak-load management
  • Grid export where DISCOM rules allow

Solar Power Plant 0.5 MW and Above

What it is

Large ground-mounted or big-rooftop solar plants of 0.5 MW (500 kW) and above for industries, institutions, captive consumption or sale of power, depending on the applicable state and central regulations.

How it works

Large solar arrays feed string or central inverters, power is stepped up through transformers and evacuated to the plant’s load or to the grid via a switchyard and approved connectivity. Remote monitoring (SCADA) tracks generation and faults.

Best for

Manufacturing industries, industrial parks, educational campuses, hospitals, warehouses, institutions and investors planning captive or open-access solar.

Key benefits

  • Large-scale reduction in purchased grid power
  • Captive / open-access options as per state policy
  • Long-term clean energy asset
  • Supports ESG and sustainability goals

On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Semi-Hybrid vs Hybrid

A quick comparison of the four commercial solar system types. Final selection depends on your load study, site and current DISCOM rules.

Incentives note: PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana applies to residential rooftop solar only. Commercial and industrial solar typically benefits from accelerated depreciation (income-tax rules) and net/gross metering as per your state DISCOM regulations – all subject to current rules. Please verify with your tax advisor and DISCOM before investing.

Commercial Solar – Frequently Asked Questions

Which commercial solar system is right for my business?

It depends on your daytime load, grid reliability, backup needs, roof or land area and DISCOM rules. With reliable grid supply, On-Grid usually gives the fastest payback; with frequent outages, Semi-Hybrid or Hybrid is better; with no grid, choose Off-Grid. SolarConnect India recommends a system after a load study and site survey.

Is PM Surya Ghar subsidy available for commercial solar?

No. PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is for residential rooftop solar only. Commercial and industrial users may benefit from accelerated depreciation under income-tax rules and from net or gross metering as per state DISCOM regulations, subject to current rules. Please confirm with your tax advisor and DISCOM.

What is the minimum size you install for businesses?

Our commercial categories start from 5 kW for On-Grid, Off-Grid, Semi-Hybrid and Hybrid systems, and from 0.5 MW for solar power plants.

How are electricity bill savings calculated for commercial solar?

Savings are estimated from expected solar generation for your location and system size, multiplied by your applicable tariff per unit, after accounting for self-consumption, export credit rules, fixed and demand charges. We share this method with your actual bills during the quote stage, not generic figures.

What approvals are needed for a 0.5 MW solar power plant?

Typically land documents, DISCOM / transmission connectivity, state nodal agency registration, electrical inspectorate clearance and, for open access, approvals as per state regulations. Requirements vary by state and change from time to time, so they are verified for each project.

Do you provide commercial solar outside West Bengal?

Yes. SolarConnect India (Techsr Enterprise), headquartered in Serampore, Hooghly, supports commercial solar enquiries across India through our team and dealer network.
