Can 3kW Solar Run a 1.5 Ton AC? Yes, With Limits (2026)
Yes, by day: 3kW solar makes ~12–15 units/day, enough for a 1.5 ton inverter AC for hours. Night use needs battery or net metering. See the math.
Short answer: Yes. A 3kW rooftop solar system can run a 1.5 ton AC during sunny daytime hours, especially an inverter AC, which usually draws about 0.8–1.5 kW once it settles. A 3kW system makes roughly 12–15 units (kWh) a day in most of India, which covers several hours of AC use plus normal household load. To run the AC at night, you need a hybrid system with a battery or an on-grid system with net metering that offsets your night usage.

Below we explain the numbers in plain language so you can size your system correctly.
How Much Power Does a 1.5 Ton AC Use?
"Ton" is cooling capacity, not electricity use. How much power the AC actually takes depends on the compressor type, star rating, room size, insulation and outside temperature.
Inverter vs non-inverter 1.5 ton AC
- Inverter AC (approx. 0.6–1.6 kW): It starts at higher power (about 1.4–1.8 kW for the first few minutes), then slows the compressor once the room is cool. Running power is typically about 0.7–1.2 kW on a normal day.
- Non-inverter (fixed-speed) AC (approx. 1.5–2.0 kW while running): The compressor runs at full power, switches off, then switches on again. Each start draws a short surge, so the average stays high.
Star rating matters
A 5-star inverter AC will usually use noticeably less electricity than a 3-star or older non-inverter model of the same tonnage. As a rough guide, a 1.5 ton AC uses about 1–1.5 units per hour (approx.) for an efficient inverter model and 1.5–2 units per hour (approx.) for a non-inverter or older model. Check the BEE label on your AC for its rated annual consumption.
Tip: Set the AC to 24–26°C. Each degree cooler adds load, and a well-shaded, sealed room cuts consumption a lot.
How Much Electricity Does a 3kW Solar System Generate in India?
In most Indian locations, 1kW of solar panels produces roughly 4–5 units a day on average. So a 3kW system makes approx. 12–15 units per day, depending on:
- Your location and sunshine hours (Rajasthan and Gujarat usually generate more than West Bengal during monsoon)
- Season (lower output on cloudy monsoon and foggy winter days)
- Panel direction, tilt and shading
- Dust on panels and the quality of installation
Peak output around noon is usually about 2.2–2.6 kW from a 3kW array, not the full 3kW, because of heat and system losses. That is still enough to carry a 1.5 ton inverter AC plus lights and fans in the middle of the day.

On-Grid vs Hybrid/Battery: Running the AC at Night
Most people use the AC in the evening and at night, when solar panels produce nothing. How you handle this depends on your system type.
On-grid system (most common, subsidy-eligible)
- During the day, solar runs your home and any extra goes to the grid through a net meter.
- At night, your AC runs on grid power.
- With net metering, the units you exported during the day are adjusted against what you take at night. So even if the AC runs at night, a 3kW system can offset much of that usage on your bill.
- Limitation: No backup during a power cut. On-grid inverters shut down when the grid fails, for safety.
Hybrid system with battery
- The battery charges from solar during the day and powers loads at night or during power cuts.
- Running a 1.5 ton AC from a battery needs a large battery bank. For example, 4 hours of AC at about 1 kW would need roughly 4–5 kWh of usable storage (approx.), plus a hybrid inverter that can handle the AC's starting current.
- Batteries add significant cost, so most homes use the battery for lights, fans and fridge, and leave the AC on grid at night.

How Many Hours Can a 3kW System Run a 1.5 Ton AC?
Using approximate figures:
| AC type | Approx. use per hour | Hours possible from ~12–15 units/day (AC only) |
|---|---|---|
| 5-star inverter 1.5 ton | ~1 unit | ~10–12 hours |
| 3-star inverter 1.5 ton | ~1.2–1.4 units | ~8–10 hours |
| Non-inverter 1.5 ton | ~1.5–2 units | ~6–8 hours |
These are energy figures for a full day of generation. In real life the rest of your home also uses power, so a practical answer is: a 3kW system can comfortably cover about 5–8 hours of 1.5 ton inverter AC use per day, along with normal household load, when net metering is in place.
What Else Can a 3kW Solar System Run?
Along with a 1.5 ton AC (in daytime), a 3kW system can typically support:
- 8–10 LED lights and 4–5 ceiling fans
- A refrigerator (about 1–1.5 units a day approx.)
- TV, Wi-Fi router, laptops and phone charging
- Washing machine (run it around noon)
- Water pump of about 0.5–1 HP for short periods
- Mixer-grinder, iron and microwave for short use
Avoid running many heavy loads at once (AC + geyser + induction + pump) on solar alone. Spread them across the day. Our article on designing solar around your electricity habits explains this in more detail.
Comparison Table: Solar System Size vs AC Capacity
| Solar system | Approx. units/day | Peak output (approx.) | AC it can realistically support (daytime) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1kW | 4–5 | 0.7–0.85 kW | Not suitable for a 1.5 ton AC on its own; may partly support a small 1 ton inverter AC with grid help | Good for lights, fans, fridge, TV |
| 2kW | 8–10 | 1.5–1.7 kW | One 1–1.5 ton inverter AC for a few hours, with little room for other loads | Small homes with light AC use |
| 3kW | 12–15 | 2.2–2.6 kW | One 1.5 ton inverter AC plus normal household load | Most popular choice for 2–3 BHK homes |
| 5kW | 20–25 | 3.7–4.3 kW | Two 1.5 ton inverter ACs in daytime, or one AC plus heavy appliances | Larger homes, multiple ACs |
All values are approximate and vary with location, season, shading and equipment.
So, can 2 ACs run on a 5kW system? In good sunlight, yes, two 1.5 ton inverter ACs can usually run together on 5kW during the day. Can a 1kW system run an AC? Not reliably on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I run a 1.5 ton AC on a 3kW solar system?
Yes. A 3kW system can run a 1.5 ton inverter AC during sunny hours, since the AC usually draws about 0.8–1.5 kW (approx.) while the panels give about 2.2–2.6 kW at peak. With net metering, it can also offset much of your night-time AC usage on the bill.
2. Can I run 2 ACs on a 5kW solar system?
In good sunlight, a 5kW system can usually run two 1.5 ton inverter ACs at the same time during the day. It makes approx. 20–25 units a day. At night, you will need grid power (with net metering) or a large battery bank.
3. Can a 1kW solar panel run an AC?
Not reliably. A 1kW system gives only about 0.7–0.85 kW at peak and approx. 4–5 units a day, which is less than what a 1.5 ton AC needs. It is better suited to lights, fans, a fridge and a TV.
4. How many solar panels are needed for a 1.5 ton AC?
For comfortable daytime use along with other home loads, a 3kW system is a practical minimum. With modern 540–590W panels, that works out to roughly 5–6 panels. The exact count depends on panel wattage and your total load.
5. Does an AC run on solar at night without a battery?
No. Solar panels do not produce power at night. With an on-grid system, the AC runs on grid electricity at night, but the extra units you exported during the day are adjusted through net metering. To run the AC directly from solar energy at night, you need a hybrid system with a suitably sized battery.
