2 kW Solar System for Home in India 2026: Units per Day, Roof Space and ₹60,000 PM Surya Ghar Subsidy

How many units a 2 kW rooftop solar system makes, roof space needed, the ₹60,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy, loans and step-by-step application for Indian homes.

A 2 kW rooftop solar system is the right size for many Indian homes that use roughly 150 to 300 units of electricity a month. It fits on a typical terrace, qualifies for the full ₹30,000-per-kW central subsidy under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, and can cut a big share of a family's monthly bill. This guide explains how much power a 2 kW system makes, how much roof it needs, what subsidy you can claim and how the application works.

How many units does a 2 kW solar system produce?

In most of India a well-installed, shadow-free system produces about 3.5 to 4.5 units (kWh) per kW per day. So a 2 kW system typically gives about 7 to 9 units a day, or roughly 210 to 270 units a month. Output is higher in sunny states and summer months and lower during the monsoon, in winter fog or with partial shade. For a deeper look at per-kW output, read our 1 kW units-per-day guide.

Is 2 kW the right size for your home?

The PM Surya Ghar scheme itself suggests capacity by monthly consumption:

  • 0 to 150 units a month: 1 to 2 kW
  • 150 to 300 units a month: 2 to 3 kW
  • Above 300 units a month: above 3 kW

A 2 kW system usually suits a home running fans, lights, a fridge, TV, a washing machine and limited AC use. If you run one or more ACs for many hours, compare it with a 3 kW system. Check the last 12 months of your electricity bills, not just one month, before you decide.

How much roof space does a 2 kW system need?

Plan for about 10 square metres of shadow-free roof per kW, so around 20 square metres (about 200 sq ft) for 2 kW. A typical 2 kW setup uses four modern panels of about 540 to 550 Wp each, an on-grid inverter of matching size, a mounting structure, earthing, lightning protection and a net meter. Keep panels away from water-tank, parapet and neighbouring-building shadows.

PM Surya Ghar subsidy for a 2 kW system

Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential homes get central financial assistance (CFA) of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW. That means a 2 kW system can receive ₹60,000 straight into the homeowner's bank account. (The third kW adds ₹18,000, with a cap of ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above.) Slightly higher rates apply in North-Eastern and hilly states and island Union Territories, so check the official portal for your state.

To qualify, the system must use DCR (domestically manufactured) solar panels, be installed by a registered vendor and be connected to the grid through net metering. Learn why in our DCR vs non-DCR guide.

Cost and loans

The final price depends on panel brand, inverter, structure height, cable length and your state, so SolarConnect gives a written quotation after a site check. For the latest price, consult us. Under PM Surya Ghar, households can also apply for collateral-free, concessional bank loans for systems up to 3 kW through the scheme portal, with interest linked to the repo rate. See our solar finance guide for options.

How to apply: step by step

  1. Register on the official portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in, with your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), consumer number and mobile number.
  2. Apply for rooftop solar and wait for the DISCOM's feasibility approval.
  3. Choose a registered vendor and get the system installed.
  4. Submit plant details and apply for the net meter.
  5. After net-meter installation and DISCOM inspection, a commissioning certificate is generated on the portal.
  6. Submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque; the subsidy is credited to your account.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying non-DCR panels and then expecting the subsidy.
  • Sizing from a single summer or winter bill instead of a full year.
  • Ignoring shadows from tanks, trees or nearby buildings.
  • Paying an unregistered installer or paying into a personal account.
