Why Solar Panel Prices Are Not Fixed: Installation, Delivery & Structure Explained

Why rooftop solar has no fixed price: how roof type, installation, delivery, mounting structure, system size, brand and inverter change your quote.

Why Solar Panel Prices Are Not Fixed

Quick answer: A rooftop solar system is not a boxed product with one price tag. The final cost depends on your roof, building height, wiring distance, delivery location, mounting structure, system size, and the panel and inverter you choose. That is why an honest installer asks for a site survey before giving an itemised quotation.

Many customers ask, "Just tell me the price of solar." It is a fair question, but two homes on the same street can need very different work. This guide explains, without hype, what changes the cost of a rooftop solar system so you can read any quotation with confidence. To compare quotes line by line, also see our 12-point quotation checklist.

1. Installation: Roof Type, Height, Labour and Wiring

  • Roof type: A flat RCC roof, a sloped roof and a tin or metal-sheet roof each need a different fixing method. Metal roofs need sealed fasteners on the purlins; RCC roofs may need anchoring or ballast and careful waterproofing.
  • Building height and access: Lifting panels and structure to a third or fourth floor, or through a narrow staircase, takes more time, manpower and safety arrangements than a ground-plus-one house.
  • Labour: The number of workers and days depends on system size, roof condition and how complex the layout is.
  • Wiring: The distance from the roof to the inverter, meter and distribution board decides cable length, conduit, earthing and protection devices (such as SPD and DC/AC distribution boxes).

2. Delivery: Distance and Logistics

Panels are large and fragile, and inverters and structure parts are heavy. Delivery to a nearby city site is simpler than delivery to a remote village, a hill area or a lane where a truck cannot enter. Extra handling, unloading and safe storage on site all add to the work involved.

3. Mounting Structure: GI, Elevated or RCC

Structure typeWhat it meansWhy the cost differs
Standard GI structureGalvanised iron frame at a low height on the roofLeast material; suits open flat roofs
Elevated structureRaised frame so the roof below stays usable or shadedMore steel, taller columns, stronger design for wind
RCC / civil foundationConcrete pedestals or blocks to hold the structureExtra civil work and curing time

In storm-prone and humid regions, the structure must be wind-rated and corrosion-resistant. A cheaper but weak structure is a false saving.

4. System Size

A larger system (more kW) needs more panels, a bigger inverter and more structure. Size should be chosen from your electricity bill and usable shade-free roof area, not guessed. Our guide on choosing the right solar system for your home explains how.

5. Panel Brand and Type

Panel technology (for example mono PERC, TOPCon or bifacial), wattage, brand and whether the panels are DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) all affect cost. For PM Surya Ghar subsidy, DCR panels are required; see DCR vs non-DCR panels. SolarConnect India works with partner brands such as Adani Solar, Waaree, Luminous, UTL Solar and Novasys Green, so the quotation can match your needs.

6. Inverter Choice

An on-grid inverter, a hybrid inverter (for battery backup) and an off-grid setup are different products. Inverter capacity, brand, monitoring features and whether you add batteries all change the final figure.

7. The Site Survey

A proper site survey checks roof strength and waterproofing, shade from trees or nearby buildings, panel orientation, cable routes, earthing location and DISCOM/net-metering requirements. Only after this can an installer give a quotation that will not change later. See the documents and site survey checklist.

Myth vs Fact

Myth: Solar has one standard price everywhere.
Fact: Every roof, height, distance and structure is different, so the honest answer comes after a site survey.

Myth: The lowest quote is always the best deal.
Fact: A low quote may leave out structure strength, earthing, cable quality or after-sales support. Compare what is included, item by item.

Myth: The structure is just a stand, it does not matter.
Fact: The structure holds the panels for many years through wind and rain. Its design and material directly affect safety and life.

Myth: Delivery and installation are always "free".
Fact: Transport, lifting and labour are real work. A clear quotation shows what is covered so there are no surprises.

Myth: A higher price means the subsidy will also be higher.
Fact: Under PM Surya Ghar, the central subsidy for eligible homes is based on system capacity (up to Rs 78,000), not on how much you pay.

PM Surya Ghar Installations

For PM Surya Ghar homes, installation is carried out by the SolarConnect India team, with Pro Power Energies as the vendor. Learn more on our PM Surya Ghar page and see completed work on our projects page.

For Dealers

Customers trust dealers who explain why a quote is what it is. If you want to offer rooftop solar with partner-brand supply and installation support, read about the SolarConnect partner programme.

FAQ

Why can't I get one fixed price for a rooftop solar system?

Because every site is different. Roof type, building height, cable length, delivery distance, structure type, system size and the panels and inverter you choose all change the final cost. A site survey is needed for a correct quote.

Does the mounting structure change the cost?

Yes. A simple GI structure on a flat RCC roof, an elevated structure that keeps the roof usable, and a structure fixed on a tin-shed roof need different material and labour, so the cost is different.

Why does delivery affect the solar price?

Panels, inverters and structures must be transported safely. Longer distance, remote locations, narrow lanes and lifting material to upper floors add transport and handling work.

Is the site survey free with SolarConnect India?

Yes. The SolarConnect India team offers a free site survey and an itemised quotation, so you can see what each part of the system includes.

Does the PM Surya Ghar subsidy depend on the price I pay?

No. The central subsidy under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is fixed by system capacity for eligible residential consumers, up to Rs 78,000, and is not a percentage of your quotation.
